Courtyard Garden at Mental Health Skilled Nursing Center at SF General Hospital
Sunny side of the courtyard will have soft and flowing foliage textures, capitalizing on the natural movement created by tall arching seed heads or flowering branches. The foreground of the plantings will be kept low, with fine textured, light green or tan grasses creating a matrix for emergent flower heads to pop out of. The color palette will remain soft, with foliage in tan and blue-green colors, and flowers in calming white and lavender colors. The flowers and grasses will be chosen for their aesthetics, as well as their habitat value, bringing wildlife into the courtyard. The shady area will have loose, fine textured foliage plants that embrace arching and weeping forms, and flow in the wind. Larger shrubs will be in the back of the plantings that have strong, structural leaves, to anchor the looseness of the foreground plants. Tall arching stems of flowers in white and lavender will punctuate the planting, hanging over the tops of the flowing grassy foliage. Public Space: Wide open space allows for communal gatherings, group projects, or celebratory events. Also provided is a gathering space that is a little more secluded for events such as group therapy or quiet activities. Semi-Private: Intimate spaces, scaled for smaller groups of people, provide spaces for lunch breaks and gathering spaces for families who are visiting the residents. Private Space: Within the courtyard are little nooks for sitting that feel private yet not isolated. They will be spaces that can allow someone a space to “escape,” yet still be within sight of the larger courtyard.
