I was as a kid, what is sometimes affectionately called, sometimes not – a military brat. Air Force military brat – both my mother and father were in the Air Force. My major form of
entertainment was watching re-runs of Gilligan’s Island, I Dream of Jeannie, and The Monkees, that’s if the base where my parents were stationed had good reception. But even when the reception was poor, my parents still had to pry me away from the television. I wanted to be Gilligan doing adventurous mishaps on the island, wiggling my nose like Jeannie making magic save the
calamity, or unlocking mystery’s while jamming music with the Monkees.
Shortly thereafter, I found similar-minded friends. On the weekends, we would reenact our favorite scenes. That came to an unpleasant end when we moved out of state. A fish out of water
in suburban Louisville, I found solace and camaraderie in the high school drama and theater club. The money ran dry when I wanted to pursue acting in college, so I (weirdly) decided to join
the military for financial benefits.
Now retired twenty years later, I have come back to my first love – acting. It did back in my childhood and does now allow me to leave my life and become a character often quite different
from myself. It also gives me the great pleasure of allowing other people to disappear from their lives, however happy they may be.
