Jazz Culture Center and Library
To revive the once vibrant jazz heritage of the Fillmore district, this project combines a Jazz Culture Center with a Library. Old and young who share a love of jazz are brought to the center. Jazz musicians and Fillmore residents who witnessed the Harlem of the West era reintroduce the youth to the lost traditions. A series of parallel walls act as datum points to organize the project. The walls are constant and provide structure similar to the lines in sheet music. Program volumes and void spaces align with or disput the walls creating connections across the walls. Trusses connect the datum walls creating a tectonic expression and strengthening the formal language of the project.
